Tami Lange Invents Her Future & Everyone Benefits
There are few who make their mark on the world, overcome the Covid-19 pandemic, all while doing work that benefits millions. Tami Lange is one of those rare individuals with a mind agile enough to problem solve on a global scale for not one but two separate industries and expand her enterprise during the Covid-19 pandemic. The two industries she’s touched could not be more different: food packaging and women’s purses. The pandemic led to the loss of 95% of her business overnight, yet she not only survived but added more products to her line of women’s fashions. Here is what happened.
Lange’s Package Revolution Meant Less Wasted Food
Ms. Lange changed the way packaged sandwiches are sold when she redesigned Landshire Inc. (her family’s food business) packages. Her goal was to preserve freshness and increase sales. She did both by incorporating 100% outside graphic coverage and superior barrier film. “I believe that wasting food is practically sinful,” Lange said. “Merchants must throw out food that goes beyond its shelf life, and few people will buy anything with a date that is near expiration. A better package would save merchants money on reorders, help prevent spoilage and based on more satisfied customers, lead to repeat business.”
A less permeable, thicker, exterior wrap for Landshire Inc. sandwiches kept air and moisture from seeping into the package. This is important because the presence of oxygen and moisture inside any food package leads to oxidation, off tastes, loss of color, mold and spoilage. The outcome? With Ms. Lange’s new design, the shelf life doubled, and sales increased by 30%. Lange and Landshire Inc went on to win ExxonMobil Chemical’s ‘Golden Mummy’ award for Flexible Packaging, as recognized in Pro Food Worldmagazine. Her family’s company was able to expand from regional to a national brand, even landing all Walmart Deli Departments across the country with their innovative products.
Another Problem to Solve
After Landshire Inc was sold, Ms. Lange found another need and invented a solution for it too, the lost, broken and often germ-infested women’s cell phone. With two of her daughters ruining their phones (one lost on a trail and the second from accidentally throwing it in the wash) and then seeing her sister-in-law with breast cancer, pulling her phone from her bra, Lange decided to find a solution for both.
She came up with a touch screen purse where women can text, talk, scroll social media, all while the phone is secure in a stylish purse. Her Save The Girls company launched in 2017. The purses were developed to help women get their cell phone out of pockets, hands, belts and bra straps and into a stylish purse where the user can have full phone access.
Lange’s purses were quickly available in over 2,000 retail outlets here in the U.S. and were often featured in popular media including QVC with big names like Lori Greiner (of Shark Tank fame) even promoting the product. This might have been the end of a nice story. But no one predicted the impact the Covid-19 on American business.
Overcoming Covid-19
One year ago, when the Covid-19 pandemic struck, all of the retail outlets carrying Save The Girls purses closed, and Lange saw 95% of her sales evaporate overnight. Not one to be deterred and determined to save her business, Lange pivoted to online sales. Happily, her web site could accommodate more sales without any major change.
She found an outlet to promote her web presence with television programs with hosts like ‘America’s Got Talent’ judge Howie Mandel. She followed that with another television appearance on ‘The View’ and provided enough revenue for her initiative to remain viable. She sold over 14,000 of her ‘Touchscreen Purses’ right after a feature on ‘Good Morning America’ (GMA). The sales from these televised features drove enough commerce for Lange to not only stay in business but expand to other lines for women that were as attractive as they were needed and useful.
Conclusion
Invention and perseverance are two words that help describe Tami Lange, but don’t stop there! Creativity, courage, and agility are also part of the fabric of her life. If the past is prologue, and it often is, whatever she does next will be revolutionary.
