As you are nearing the end of your working career, you’re bound to be thinking about what your life would look like once you no longer have to work. Though some might find the prospect of traveling daunting, because most people tend to prefer stability and routine once they reach a certain age, it could be the perfect time for you to explore some destinations and, possibly, even find your new home.

There are advantages of both traveling and settling down once you turn 55, for example. The former allows you make all those dreams you once had come true, while the latter is a better option for those who have always lacked an adventurous spirit. However, as we tend to live longer and healthier lives, there are so many opportunities for us to explore and exploit that it would be such a shame not to use them. So, let’s take a look at some of the most popular destinations for senior citizens, that are both worth visiting and possibly settling down at.

Spain/Portugal

Both countries are famous for their mild climate, rich culture and history and hospitality. If you’d like to visit or live in a country that offers something quite different from what you’re used to, Spain or Portugal might be the right choice. You are spoilt for choice when it comes to attractive regions and cities and you can find pretty much anything that you want. What is definitely true is that you can relax and soak up the atmosphere and enjoy yourself.

Italy

If Europe is the continent you’d like to explore and discover more, a visit to Italy is a must. There is so much history, art and culture in almost every part of this spectacular country. Imagine strolling around the streets of Florence or Rome or listening to a serenade in Venice. If that’s not your cup of tea, how about Lake Como? Some of the world’s most amazing works of art can be found in Italy, such as the statue of David or the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The Trevi Fountain and Colosseum are just two of the most popular landmarks in the country’s capital city and they alone deserve a visit. Many people have decided to retire in Italy and it’s clear to see why.

Australia

One of the most diverse countries in the world, Australia offers some spectacular sights and many advantages for living there. To begin with, some of the most popular beaches in the world are located here. Also, the wildlife is nothing short of awe-inspiring. It can be the perfect place for you to retire, for example in an amazing retirement village off the Central Coast. The hospitality and kindness of those living down under is well documented, which is a great bonus.

Thailand

If you’re more interested in exotic destinations, look no further than Thailand. Renowned for its cheerful people and warm climate, this country also offers some of the most mouth-watering food at very affordable prices. You can have a quite relaxing or action-packed holiday here, depending on what you’re after. What you’ll definitely see is lush greenery, breathtaking beaches and hot spring spas that will help you make the most out of your stay here. For those who are more adventurous, there is scuba diving, snorkeling or windsurfing, but only if you feel confident and strong enough.

Needless to say, there are many more destinations that you should visit once you’re no longer so active or when you have more free time. Still, even this short selection should give you the taste of what is out there and what you might be missing. Whether you’ll simply pay some destination a visit or make it your new home depends on many factors, but you’ll never know what your life could be like unless you venture beyond the borders of your country.
