Skin damage and Acne scar treatments – Know your options

Updated on August 2, 2019

Although it is not possible to prevent acne and pimples because there is no foolproof way of ensuring it, there are ways to avoid its outbreak. To keep acne at bay or even if you do not have it, you must always keep your face clean, which is the basic need for skincare. Wash your face twice daily to remove dead skin cells, impurities, and extra oil from the surface of the skin. Wash more than twice daily is not necessary because too much of it can do more harm than good. Use a mild facial cleanser with warm water but never use hot water. Avoid using deodorant soap or any other harsh soap as it can aggravate damaged skin condition and cause irritation. Never scrub your skin harshly but gently wash it with your hands or soft cloth.  Use a dry and clean towel to dry your face.

Acne can leave deep scars on the skin, depending on its severity.   A variety of treatments can help to make it less noticeable, and for choosing the right treatment, you must consult a doctor at any dermatology San Diego clinic. The doctor will examine you and recommend a treatment plan depending on the type of damage to your skin and its seriousness.

Types of acne scar

Acne cars belong to the following types.

  • Ice pick scars are small pits but deep.
  • Boxcar is the other type of scar that has sharp edges and angles and can be deep or shallow.
  • Rolling scars have a wavy look and tend to be shallow and wide caused by the damage under the skin.

Treatment of scars

Acne scar treatment aims at making the skin surface smooth, and it may involve more than one treatment. The treatment is carried out either a hospital’s outpatient department or at the doctor’s clinic. Skin resurfacing is the goal of the treatment by removing the skin damage layers of skin so that new healthy skin can appear. The doctor might use any of the three procedures, namely laser, dermabrasion, and chemical peel.

Laser – Laser treatment helps to remove skin irregularities like acne scars. The procedure consists of directing short, concentrated pulsating beams of laser light at irregular skin to remove precisely each skin layer. This creates a more even skin surface.

Dermabrasion – is a non-invasive surgical procedure for creating a smooth skin surface.  The procedure uses a high speed rotating wheel to sand the outer layers of skin.  After the procedure, the skin that grows back is usually smoother and looks younger.

Chemical peel – This procedure is appropriate for removing deeper scars by using a special type of acid to remove the top layer of your skin.

After resurfacing, it takes about 7-10 days for new skin to form.

Regardless of which procedure the doctor recommends for you, ask a lot of questions to understand the procedure in details and what could be its adverse effects in addition to the cost involved. You should go ahead with the treatment only after doing a proper risk analysis.
