Playing Golf Can Enrich Your Retirement

Updated on December 11, 2019

In the United Kingdom, the standard retirement age is 65. After working for decades, suddenly finding yourself with a lot of free time can be a little bit overwhelming. How do you fill all of the hours that you used to spend working? Once you tackle all of the chores you have been putting off around your house, you may find yourself wondering what to do to stay busy and engaged.

Discover An Exciting New Hobby With Golf

One of the best things about retirement is that it allows you to explore new hobbies and to learn more about your interests. Finding a hobby that you love can dramatically enrich your life, giving you something meaningful and rewarding to do in your free time. The question is, what should you do? Ideally, you should look for a hobby that is not only fun but also keeps you active, both mentally and physically.

Taking up golf is the perfect solution. One of the best things about golf is that it can be enjoyed by people of all ages. After retirement, you can play a round of golf anytime you want since you don’t have to worry about fitting it in around work.

There is no better time to get started than now. If you haven’t played golf before, start by finding a pay-and-play course in your area. Then, head out and play a few rounds to see if you enjoy it. Plan your visit during one of the slower times at the course so that you can take your time and relax while you play. While other sports are packed with heart-pounding, adrenaline-inducing action, golf is a lot calmer and more relaxing. It can also give you a reason to travel and get to the sun – look at these great trips and courses in Portugal at Algarve Sun for example – wonderful!

Granted, like any game, it is not without its share of frustration. One thing that makes golf so interesting and exciting, however, is the challenge to continually improve. Even when the weather turns bad, you can still enjoy playing golf. Years ago, people used to joke with me about how I was going to keep playing during the winter. Today, golf simulators have made it possible to play golf any time of the year, no matter what the weather is like outside. Best of all, you don’t have to worry about bundling up in winter clothes or dealing with cold conditions. Golf simulators are extremely accurate, which can help you improve your golf game so that when you get back out on the course in the spring, you are a lot better than you were before winter set in.

With Age Comes Wisdom

Golf can be quite athletic – particularly at the professional level. Not many people have the muscular control or timing necessary to make the most of their equipment. Despite that, many people wind up trying way too hard, swinging as hard as they can. This tactic rarely works. Instead, it just causes people to overswing and throws their timing out of whack, disrupting their balance and making it harder for them to hit a clean shot. As an older golfer, you can rely on your wisdom rather than your strength. Since you aren’t attacking the ball every time you swing at it, you have a lot more control over its path and a lot more consistency in your game.

Golf Can Be Beneficial During Retirement

Not long ago on the blog, we talked about how important it is from a health standpointto maintain an active lifestyle during retirement. Golf fits the bill perfectly. Not only can you stay busy by participating in events or competitions but you can also make new friends. It provides a perfect chance to socialize with others, doing something that you enjoy. If you find yourself longing for more responsibility like you had at your old job, you could even join a club committee or find some other way to get more actively involved.

If nothing else, I hope that this article has given you something to think about. Is golf the right choice for you? The only way to know for sure is to try it out. Set up a time to play at a nearby golf club or driving range to see if it is something you enjoy. Even if you have never played before, you usually can find someone who is more than happy to walk you through the basics.
