Most Common Water Leaks in a House

One of the most dreaded parts of being a homeowner is when something breaks or leaks. Leaks are some of the most intimidating things that can happen in a home because people often can’t fix plumbing issues on their own. Explore some of the most common water leaks in a house.

Water Softener Leaks

Most homes have water softeners installed to soften the natural water. Fortunately, if your water softener leaks, it’s most likely a quick fix. First, check for any loose water line connections. If there’s a problem with the water line, you can most likely fix it yourself with a new valve or by tightening an existing connection.

If the issue is larger and the brine tank is punctured, you may need to consult or contract a professional to come and fix the issue. If there’s any water damage to your home, contact your insurance company right away so that they can assess it.

Pool Leaks

If your home has a pool, you must take diligent care of it. A pool leak can cost a homeowner a significant amount of money over time. For example, a hole the size of a small sewing needle in a pool can lead to over 900 gallons of water waste within only 24 hours—image how much waste a larger hole can cause.

Be sure to keep an eye out for the warning signs of a pool leak:

  • Cracks in the pool’s shell
  • Algae formation
  • The pool’s surroundings are continuously wet or damp
  • The water level is dropping at a faster rate than normal

Water Main Break

A water main break is one of the most serious leaks a house can experience. Water mains are typically located under the street in front of a home. Even though they aren’t in your home, they can still create disaster when they break. For example, when a water main breaks, the water can flow out of the pipe and flood your basement or even contaminate the water in your home. A water main can break for a number of reasons, but if you suspect this has happened, contact your local authorities and go to your home’s shut-off valve.

A faucet leak is something more manageable, but a water main break requires the work of professionals. Evaluate your situation and the amount of water leaking, and discuss it with your insurance company and a professional plumber.
