Erectile dysfunction is defined as the inability to achieve an erection firm enough for sex. This can cause some serious embarrassment among men. There are a number of causes of Erectile Dysfunction; some are physical and others are psychological.

Thankfully, there are several different ways to treat erectile dysfunction. That’s what we’re looking at today, five treatments for erectile dysfunction.

1: Medication

Medications like Sildenafil  or Viagra as its otherwise known can be used to help with erectile dysfunction. It causes the nervous system to release nitric oxide into the tissue of the penis. The nitric oxide helps in the production of cyclic guanosine monophosphate which dilates the arteries in the penis. The arteries and tissue fill with blood and an erection occurs.

The use of Viagra is fairly common but one should keep in mind that this is a prescription medication in most places. You can’t just go to your local pharmacy and buy the stuff. It is possible to purchase online from a trusted seller.  With that in mind, be careful to only take the prescribed dose and know if it will react badly with any additional medications that you’re taking.

2: Exercise

Exercise, this may seem like an obvious – and not so obvious – treatment. Now, how does exercise fit in? Well, for starters; you develop muscle tone. Your endurance and cardio improve and, depending on what you’re training, your flexibility will also increase.

Better strength, endurance, cardio, and flexibility allows your body to function the way it’s supposed to and opens up some…interesting possibilities for your more experimental fun times.

3: Counselling

Counselling is another easy way to treat ED…well…maybe it’s not that easy. The idea of talking to someone – anyone about having erectile dysfunction; is an awkward one at best. Then again, I’m not someone who discusses medical issues with anyone anyways so take that for what it’s worth.

That said, relationships have problems and sometimes those problems need to be discussed with a mental health professional. Psychological issues, physical issues, relationship-related stress, these are all things that can contribute to ED. Having someone to talk to can help you be more comfortable and confident with yourself and, by extension, your partner.

4: Pumps…What?

*sigh* Who came up with this? Okay, so I have to preface this entry with a film analogy of sorts. The first I’d heard of a penis pump was in Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. Apparently, Powers carries one of these things with him (though he vehemently denies it). Why do I bring up Austin Powers? Well that’s because I thought it was a film gag; a joke meant to get a laugh out of the audience!

These things create a vacuum around and pull blood into the penis. Once an erection has been achieved, ring is slipped down to the base to keep the blood in the veins. This ring may restrict ejaculation and you may have bruised equipment after use.

5: Natural Remedies

If you’re allergic to specific chemicals in the usual medications for ED (i.e. Viagra), there are a number of natural remedies that can be used. Certain plants and natural healing practices can be used in treatment. Ginseng, hormonal treatment, and acupuncture are just a few options when it comes to natural treatments.

Now, while most of these have some solid research behind them to prove their efficacy; this isn’t always the case. With that in mind, you should always exercise extreme caution when looking into using a more natural remedy. First off, not all of them work and second some of them have particularly nasty side-effects.

If you have an existing medical condition, it would be a good idea to first talk to a medical professional and make sure that you don’t end up doing yourself serious harm.

In conclusion, there are many causes for ED and there are just as many treatments available. Always make sure that you’re safe with these methods; follow your doctor’s advice closely and report any discomfort that these methods cause you.
