What methods or techniques do you employ to help set achievable goals and track progress?

Setting achievable goals and tracking progress is essential for continued success in any field, and orthopedic surgery is no exception. I rely on externally imposed deadlines, such as submission dates for publications or scheduled presentations at scientific meetings, to keep me focused and motivated. These deadlines provide a clear framework for what needs to be accomplished and by when. Additionally, the acceptance of my manuscripts and invitations to present at conferences serve as benchmarks for progress. These milestones not only validate the quality of my work but also push me to continuously improve. By setting specific goals and diligently tracking progress, I ensure that I remain productive and aligned with my long-term professional objectives.

How do you handle difficult clients, customers, or coworkers?

Dealing with difficult situations, whether with clients, customers, or coworkers, requires a delicate balance of empathy and assertiveness. When faced with a challenging situation, my first step is to apologize when appropriate. Acknowledging any mistakes or misunderstandings helps to diffuse tension and shows that I am taking the issue seriously. Negotiation is the next step, where I work to find a solution that satisfies all parties involved. Finally, I am not afraid to ask for their help in resolving the issue. Involving them in the solution process often leads to a more collaborative and positive outcome. What do you believe are the most crucial qualities or skills a leader should possess, and how do you embody these qualities?

In my experience, the most crucial qualities for a leader are integrity, communication, consistency, and humility. Integrity ensures that my actions are always in line with ethical standards, which builds trust and respect. Communication is key to ensuring that everyone involved understands the goals and expectations, reducing the risk of misunderstandings. Consistency in actions and decisions helps to create a stable and predictable environment, which is particularly important in a medical setting. Finally, humility is essential. As a leader, I believe it’s important to be able to say, “I am sorry” or “I need your help.” By embodying these qualities, I can lead effectively while fostering a supportive and collaborative team environment.

Can you share a specific example of how you helped a colleague or coworker overcome a significant challenge or obstacle?

One of the more challenging situations I encountered involved a colleague struggling with substance abuse. Recognizing the seriousness of the issue, I intervened by advising the colleague to seek professional help. I also supported them in requesting a medical leave of absence to focus on recovery. This intervention was crucial not only for the well-being of the individual but also for maintaining the safety and integrity of our practice. By addressing the issue head-on and providing the necessary support, I was able to help the colleague overcome this significant obstacle. This experience reinforced the importance of compassion and proactive leadership in the workplace.

How do you decide what to do for yourself and what to delegate to others?

Decision-making around delegation is a critical aspect of effective leadership. I approach this by recognizing my strengths and limitations. While I may be an expert in certain areas, I do not let ego or vanity prevent me from seeking input from others who may have more expertise in specific areas. For example, if a particular task requires specialized knowledge that I do not possess, I have no hesitation in delegating it to someone more qualified. This not only ensures that the task is completed to the highest standard but also empowers others by recognizing and utilizing their expertise. By delegating wisely, I can focus on the areas where I can add the most value while ensuring that the team as a whole operates efficiently.

How do you motivate your team for outstanding results?

Motivating a team requires a combination of appreciation, empowerment, and clear communication. I make it a point to regularly say “thank you” to my team members, acknowledging their hard work and contributions. This simple act of gratitude goes a long way toward boosting morale and fostering a positive work environment. Additionally, I am not afraid to ask for assistance when needed, recognizing that collaboration often leads to better outcomes. By delegating tasks to those who may be more informed on certain matters, I not only ensure that the best decisions are made but also empower my team members to take ownership of their roles. This approach creates a motivated team that is committed to achieving outstanding results.
