Creative Ways To Use Your Fabric Scraps for Fall

Fabric scraps: every sewer has them. They begin to pile up after a while, and you may not know what to use them for. The days of fret are behind you. These are a few creative ways to use your fabric scraps that are perfect for fall.

Feather Earrings

Who doesn’t love a new pair of earrings? A change of season is the perfect time to show off a new pair of earrings you made yourself. You can use leftover plaid fabric scraps to drive home the autumnal appearance.

Cut out your material using a template as a guideline, and sew the fabric to twine. This will allow the feather to have movement. Then, fray the fabric by pulling out the threads from the long side until you reach the string. Use a pin to loosen up any harder material to fray. Finally, add beads to the top and attach the earring hook of your choice.

Fabric Pumpkins

These fabric pumpkins from Crafty Morning would make adorable decorations for any Thanksgiving table, entryway, or mantel. The size of the pumpkin will depend on the length of your fabric. Also, you’ll need to gather a few other materials to finish this DIY project.

  • Fabric of your choice
  • Corks
  • Hot glue gun and glue
  • Twine
  • Lace or ribbon
  • Thread and needles
  • Fabric fusion
  • Polyfill

Cut out the size of your pumpkin and turn the fabric inside out. Using fabric fusion or hot glue, create a faux hem about a ¼ inch in for the raw edge. Let the glue dry before moving on to the next step. With about an arm’s length of thread, double thread a sewing needle and double knot the end to keep the seam from popping out.

Begin sewing around ¼ inch from the faux edge and weave the needle completely around the diameter of the fabric. Then, pull the thread tightly and tie it to secure. Now you can create a stem by gathering the material and tightly wrapping the string around it. Stuff the pumpkin with polyfill but leave space in the middle. Enclose the top of the pumpkin by sewing around the raw edge again. However, avoid closing it off completely until the project feels plump.

Create the pumpkin pleats by pulling the thread from the bottom to the top. Wrap twine around corks to create the stem and secure the string with hot glue. Using more hot glue, place the stem onto the fabric pumpkin. Then, you have your pumpkin!

Beautifully Decorated Journal

Journaling is a beloved hobby by many. We love jotting our thoughts, hopes, and dreams to look back on later in life. Journals are also an excellent place to write down recipes or lists for the future. Why not decorate one using leftover fabric scraps? This idea would make the perfect fall birthday gift.

Adhere the wrong side of the leaf template to the fabric and cut around to allow for material overhang. Stitch the material, leaving the template inside. It will provide stability when you’re sewing the fabric to the journal. Using a sewing machine, attach the shapes to the notebook.

Of course, you can use any shape you want but keep it fall-themed with leaves, pumpkins, or anything spooky.

These are three perfect ways to create something beautiful out of fabric scraps this fall. Ensure you keep your materials and fabric organized between projects. It makes life easier when searching for a particular pattern or material type.
