Sacred & Delicious: A Modern Ayurvedic Cookbook by Lisa Joy Mitchell

Twenty years ago, Lisa Joy Mitchell was struggling in her corporate PR position because of health issues, including IBS, chronic pain, and  insomnia. She hesitated to get on meds, having watched her parents suffer through multiple side effects, which led to a dependence on even more drugs. After a surgeon proposed surgery for a frozen shoulder, she instead chose a 5-day detoxification program at the Ayurvedic Institute in New Mexico, where Mitchell’s pain was reduced significantly. She began studying Ayurveda, India’s traditional medical system and approach to wellness. Mitchell found that embracing Ayurveda’s dietary recommendations made her feel better than ever, even as she approached middle-age. This fall, Mitchell will release Sacred & Delicious: A Modern Ayurvedic Cookbook(She Writes Press; October 16, 2018; 978-1631523472; $28.95; paperback). This 280-page primer on India’s ancient dietary approach to wellness is a celebration of the sacred and healing power of food and a personal food memoir.

In Sacred & Delicious, Mitchell applies the Ayurvedic principles of balance to American-style cooking, offering 108 vegetarian dishes—most with vegan options and all but two of them gluten-free. Mitchell’s unique cooking style often blends cooking traditions of East and West, Southern and Jewish, with the creative use of spices. Mitchell emphasizes legumes and vegetables in her entrées and soups, creating dishes that address modern food concerns such as gluten and dairy intolerance. She includes “clean” versions of American-style breads, pancakes, and desserts. Her forte, and focus, are easy-to-cook dishes that dazzle the senses so that someone new to a restrictive diet need not feel deprived of pleasure: a broccoli soup with almond butter, holiday sweet potatoes topped with glazed pecans, a gluten-free peach cobbler (to reflect her Southern roots), and matzoh ball soup (to honor her Jewish heritage). Sacred & Delicious also includes traditional Ayurvedic healing foods—whole mung soup, split mung dal, and kitchari.

Mitchell says she approached writing the book as a student, journalist, and memoirist, interviewing experts and sharing experiences based on her personal exploration of cooking and contemplation of the adage “food is sacred.” She invites readers to engage with food in a new way, not merely as an object of pleasure—though Ayurveda teaches that food must be delicious to be healthy. Ayurveda recognizes food as energy—not just fuel, but as an expression of divine consciousness, the living power of creation.

Recipes include:

  • Great Autumn Soups: Broccoli Soup with Almond Butter; Roasted Squash Soup with Glazed Pecan Garnish; Chickpea Soup with sun-dried tomatoes and olives.

Relentless: How A Massive Stroke Changed My Life for the Better by Ted W. Baxter

Ted W. Baxter was at the top of his game when he suffered a massive ischemic stroke without any warning signs, and doctors feared he wouldn’t survive the trauma. However, after extensive therapy, his life has returned to near pre-stroke normalcy – other than continuing aphasia. He currently uses his experiences to educate and inspire others who have suffered similar trauma.

In his memoir Relentless: How A Massive Stroke Changed My Life for the Better(Greenleaf Book Group Press; on sale now), Ted describes his remarkable recovery from a massive stroke at age 41. After suffering from this stroke, Ted encountered 3 seizures, loss of speech, couldn’t write, memory loss, and the loss of use of his right arm and leg – leaving him unable to walk or utilize his dominant hand. He underwent years of physical and speech therapy and tireless exercises to regain his strength.

Despite his continuing aphasia, the impairment of language affecting the production or comprehension of speech and the ability to read or write, most of his life has returned to pre-stroke normalcy. Readers of Relentless will be inspired by Ted’s incredible journey of determination and recovery. It is a great resource for stroke survivors, caregivers, and their loved ones, but it is also an inspiring and motivating read for anyone who is facing struggles in their own life.

In Relentless, you’ll read about:

  • The moving story of a successful businessman who stared down fear and frustration as he relearned how to speak, express himself, and even walk.
  • The effect of the damage caused by the stroke and ensuing aphasia on Ted’s life and how he was able to make a remarkable comeback through extensive therapy and rehabilitation.
  • How Ted’s stroke affected, strengthened, and at times challenged his relationship with his family, and loved ones.
  • The necessity of dedicated and knowledgeable medical professionals, caregivers, and a strong support system in the recovery process.
  • Several techniques and activities that helped contribute to Ted’s post-stroke recovery.

Keep Away from GRAS: Generally Recognized As Safe by Dr. Marcela Magda Popa

What if the “safe” products we use every day are actually making us sick?

“Many of us don’t realize that common foods, medications, and ordinary household items that we use multiple times a day contain unhealthy ingredients, that even at low doses can cause detrimental health problems for some,” warns Dr. Marcela Magda Popa, author of Keep Away from GRAS: Generally Recognized As Safe. “The key is to be aware of the dangers of such products, especially if you suffer from a chronic condition.”

In her new book, Dr. Popa draws from her 16 years as a Board Certified Internal Medicine physician and her own experience as a patient suffering from autoimmune arthritis, breast abnormalities, and migraine headaches to raise awareness of the harmful effects that common household products and substances may have on our health. “I hope this book, written by a doctor from a patient’s point of view, will change the way people look at everyday products,” says Dr. Popa.

Her new book touches on the following:

  • How one can live a healthier lifestyle simply by avoiding certain ingredients in cosmetics, medications, foods, and other household items
  • How estrogen-like chemicals can cause breast abnormalities – and what you should know about them
  • How to avoid migraines – the answer is in your foods and environment
  • What to do if you suffer from a chronic ailment that doctors can’t seem to find the cause of
  • Why a better government regulatory framework needs to be implemented in order to truly make sure Americans are not exposed to harmful items

So what are you waiting for? Take charge of your health today and learn which products and substances you need to cut from your routine to improve your symptoms and start feeling better!

“Absolutely, Positively, Genuine, Real Fake News”

fakenews

Fake News is actually a wonderful thing in that it allows for so many appealing possibilities to consider. All fake news needs to have is some element of truth in order for it to reverberate with viewers, readers or consumers of news through any source. For example, there is a James Comey, he is a former director of the FBI; there is a Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, she is a current justice of the United States Supreme Court; both persons work out of Washington, DC; sexual harassment exists and used Hummers are sold via classified ads all the time. That seems pretty ordinary when considered as separate items, but when you combine them in a single news item you get “Former FBI Director Comey Accuses Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg of Sexual Harassment!” See…simple, quick, easy, hard-to-prove and hard-to disprove and the prospect that it could be true makes the possibility even more fascinating.

Another item of keen interest in “Absolutely…Positively…Genuine…Real Fake News” is the presser held when the Clooney’s and their family came back to the US. They were here to announce the opening of the “George and Amal Clooney Beverly Hills Muslim Outreach Center.” The author uses this opportunity to write about his ruminations so that the reader may consider his experiences as their view into a world reserved for the privileged few. Another favorite APGR Fake News feature is when “Chelsea Handler Launches the “I Hate Trump Fan Club” and a stellar event it was. The Club’s Advisory Board is comprised of so many women who have so little regard for the President that it makes for an excellent example into what Americans call a study in cohesive and collective thought. There are so many possibilities in fake newsworthy events that the mind boggles. You need not go any further than when “North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un Weds actress Madeleine LeBeau” or HBO’s John Oliver as he taped his soon-to-be-released documentary “The Snowflake Lounge,” or Bill Nye “The Science Guy Blames Man-made Global Warming for Drastic Drop of UFO Sightings” plus more than 36 articles, interviews, blog posts, features all written to titillate, illuminate and fascinate the reader. It all culminates in the First Annual “Fake News Awards” where honors are bestowed on the men and women who make fake news what it is!

“Absolutely, Positively, Genuine, Real Fake News” is written as a tribute to America; a marvel to the fact that even when the media reports fake news they do it in a truly magnificent way. The mainstream of news networks, entertainment venues, online blogs, prestigious newspapers and other media have turned a beautifully blind eye toward the curiosity for truth that had been their hallmark. Now it seems that a uniformity of common purpose guides so much of what is thought, written, reported and accepted by the fifth estate. Whether there is a story about “The Trump Limbaugh Barbeque” or destroyed emails or some Russian collusion, real or imagined, sourced or unsourced, founded or unfounded, that does not deter the ever powerful cannons of the Mainstream Media from using the American news consumers as fodder…truly magnificent!

POSITIVE DISCIPLINE FOR TODAY’S BUSY (AND OVERWHELMED) PARENT: How to Balance Work, Parenting, and Self for Lasting Well-Being

With increasing pressure to excel at home, at work, and at personal relationships, parents often find themselves long on stress and short on temper. So how does one kick the stress and parent effectively without sacrificing the well-being of themselves and their families?

In their new book, POSITIVE DISCIPLINE FOR TODAY’S BUSY (AND OVERWHELMED) PARENT: How to Balance Work, Parenting, and Self for Lasting Well-Being [press release below], educators Joy Marchese and Kristina Bill worked with Jane Nelsen, the founder of the Positive Discipline Methodology program and co-author of the popular Positive Discipline series. They set out to develop a set of practices and skills for overstretched parents desperate to make life a little easier while understanding that raising well-adjusted, emotionally connective children is their most important job. The book is packed with actionable tips to help parents work smarter – not harder – both at home and at work.

Built on the principles of the Nelsen’s highly regarded and successful methodology, the book presents the necessity of discipline while guiding parents to make the choices they have either never considered or never understood the value in. By discovering the underlying causes of misbehavior busy parents will trade-in “helicoptering” or “tigering” for positive and educational methods of discipline designed to build confidence and a sense of responsibility in children.

PARENTING THROUGH PUBERTY: Mood Swings, Acne, and Growing Pains

Each year more than 12 million children in the United States begin the multi-stage, multi-year phase of puberty which will ultimately result in the transformation of the carefree child into the responsible young adult.  That is why the American Academy of Pediatrics and Dr. Suanne Kowal-Connelly created a new book, PARENTING THROUGH PUBERTY: Mood Swings, Acne, and Growing Pains.

Going through puberty in 2018 is very different than it was when you and I were 12. Social media, cyber bullying, increasing environmental toxins, and new brain science studies mean that most parents have yet to catch up with what it really means to be a teenager in now vs. then. Dr. Kowal-Connelly’s book will change all that and put them on the right track to raising a happy, healthy, and vibrant teenager.

This valuable new guide to navigating the trickiest stage of childhood development will prove to be an indispensable resource for parents raising teenagers in the modern world.

Dr. Kowal-Connelly reassures parents that puberty is not to be feared, but to be celebrated. She offers specific guidance for parents to help ease the anxiety and discomfort of emerging adolescence. PARENTING THROUGH PUBERTY covers:

  • The five stages of puberty – what’s normal, what’s not
  • Overcoming “this can’t be happening yet” syndrome
  • Understanding the “puberty brain”: risk-taking, decision-making, boundary testing
  • Helping adolescents develop healthy trust, self-discipline, self-control and emotional resilience
  • Recognizing the warning signs of eating disorders, self-harm, substance abuse, low self-esteem, bullying, social isolation and more
  • Nutrition for the changing brain and nervous system

The last section of the book focuses on the importance of health and wellness for the adolescent. Parents often worry about their teen’s food choices, sleep habits or lack of physical activity. Adolescents understand and want to make all kinds of health and wellness adjustments, but they can’t do it in a vacuum. They need parents to help and to model healthy habits. PARENTING THROUGH PUBERTY: Mood Swings, Acne, and Growing Pains equips parents with the information they need to navigate the physical and emotional changes shaping their child.

Musing Mediterranean: Fun, Family, and Faraway Places Transform an Anxious Traveler by Beth Daigle

Greece. Italy. Turkey. Whether or not you’ve visited them in person, imagining these places conjures up unnaturally blue oceans, whitewashed seaside hillsides, fragrant markets, and so much delicious food. Take these sights, add in a laughable number of family members, serious anxiety about air travel, and homebody tendencies, and you have Beth Daigle’s charming and funny travel memoir, Musing Mediterranean: Fun, Family, and Faraway Places Transform an Anxious Traveler. The book takes us along for the ride as Daigle experiences all the wonders the Mediterranean has to offer in a way that is uniquely hers—filled with family, foibles, discovery, and joy.

When Beth Daigle’s husband, Tony, announced that he was planning a two-week Mediterranean cruise, she wasn’t exactly excited. Plagued by anxieties about leaving home and air travel, as well as the fact that this was to be a multi-generational family vacation including her parents, daughters, sister and her family, there was some definite potential for disaster. Despite that phobia and reluctance, though, the Mediterranean called her in a way that she couldn’t deny—she’s half Greek and half Italian, and seeing her ancestral countries had always been a dream. Musing Mediterranean is the full account of that dream coming true—from the planning phase to the return home, Daigle takes us along on her family’s journey through Rome, Sicily, Athens, Ephesus, the Greek Islands, and Naples.

In her warm and approachable prose, Daigle communicates the beauty, history, architecture and culture of each location that her family visits, and a sense of awe that the trip has given her for what is truly a life altering experience. Whether or not you’ve experienced the beauty of the places Daigle visits in this book firsthand, you’ll feel like you have after going on this journey with her. Most importantly though, in a time when we could all use a bit of an escape now and then, Musing Mediterranean is an unequivocally happy book that injects humor wherever possible. One that will make readers glad they’ve read it.

The Glimmers Save Christmas by Robert Agnello and Nick Meola

WHILE SAVING SANTA AND HIS SLEIGH, ONE ELF TEACHES CHILDREN ABOUT FAITH AND HOPE

In THE GLIMMERS SAVE CHRISTMAS Starring Jing Els and Hollee Award-Winning Writer Robert Agnello Shares Larger Message About the Power of Good That Lasts The Whole Year

There’s trouble at the North Pole. With Faith and Hope at perilously low levels, it looks like Christmas may have to be cancelled this year. Now, Yuletide’s only chance lies with Jing Els and Hollee – the Glimmers – in THE GLIMMERS SAVE CHRISTMAS (On The Lamb Productions; November 2018), the third book in the series by award-winning writer Robert Agnello and illustrator Nick Meola.

The situation in Christmastown is grim. All the reindeer are sick with”can’tflyitis” and in the toy workroom, the other elves are feeling dim and weak. Despite the dismal outlook, Elf Extraordinaire Roger keeps working away, making presents for girls and boys all over the world so that Santa can deliver them on time. It’s his hope and faith that brings some unexpected assistance just in time to save Christmas.

Meet the Glimmers. Glimmers are tiny beings of light that make everything good glow. When we make bad choices, our Glimmer lights fade and turn into Dimmers, but when we start making good choices again, our Glimmers will glow all the brighter. Jing Els is a Glimmer of Hope and Hollee is a Glimmer of Faith. Roger’s certainty that Santa will deliver his presents to good little girls and boys, and working feverishly to get all the toys ready, makes Jing Els and Hollee shine brilliantly. Roger’s belief also enables them to recruit other Glimmers and help Santa’s sleigh fly once more. Together, the Glimmers show that the spirit of Christmas can glow brightly even in the darkest of times.

The Glimmers books focus on virtues – truth, respect, hope, compassion – that will inspire children to make this a better world for us all. “I hope The Glimmers help parents, family members, and teachers have a larger discussion with the children in their lives and show them how they can become a force for good,” says author Robert Agnello.

This intriguing book and associated guided recording demonstrate the power of past life therapy to enhance effectiveness in your current life.

A new wave of readers will have access to a powerful tool for personal healing and spiritual growth as Ann C. Barham’s The Past Life Perspective prepares for a softcover print run on December 4, 2018.

This moving collection of case studies, drawn from Barham’s own client sessions, leads readers through the process of mining one’s unconscious memories from prior lifetimes in order to resolve issues and deepen their understanding of their current life. Suggested exercises at the end of each chapter help readers expand their awareness of their own past lifetimes and broaden their spiritual perspective.

“I was awed by how many readers reached out to say this book helped them on their journey of self-discovery,” said Barham. “That’s why I’m so excited for this new print run and the guided meditation I prepared to deepen people’s understanding of the process and allow some exploration on their own.”

The Past Life Regression Guided Recording is similar to what one would experience in a large group session at a workshop, and is ideal for anyone who is curious about the method after reading the book.

It begins as a guided meditation to help listeners enter a state of deep relaxation. Here they have the opportunity to glimpse the personality and key events of a prior lifetime and are shown how to process these moments.

This Guided Recording runs around 40 minutes and is available for download at https://www.pastlives.org/book/past-life-regression-guided-recording

The Past Life Perspective can also be pre-ordered now at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and BAM! Books a Million for holiday gifting before it hits bookstore shelves on December 4, 2018.
