5 Ways to Make Your Home More Appealing to Buyers

Updated on February 12, 2021

Selling your home can be a stressful and expensive experience. We all want to sell our home as quickly as we possibly can and make as much profit as possible. To make our home stand out from the crowd, we can try a number of methods to improve its saleability. Here are 5 ways to make your home more appealing to buyers.

Ensure Everything is in Good Working Order

Nothing puts a potential buyer off a property more than discovering that it is filled with faulty appliances, plumbing, or electrics.

Before you put your home up for sale, go over it with a fine-tooth comb and test all equipment and utilities. Have the air conditioning, washing machine, dishwasher, heating, toilet, shower, bath, and water heaters checked over and serviced by a local plumber such as a company that does plumbing in Salt Lake City, Utah. Have an electrician check over all of the electrical lines and appliances that you are including with the sale.

Give It Curb Appeal

First impressions are critical. If potential buyers arrive outside your property and don’t like what they see, they will just keep driving by.

Tidy your garden by mowing the lawn, weeding, and trimming any overgrown vegetation. People like to see that the land is easily maintained. A pretty garden with lots of attractive flowers will add color and interest.

If the paintwork on your door, windows, wooden paneling, shutters, and fencing is peeling and looking tattered, give them a fresh coat of paint. Make sure everything is clean and tidy – sweep the paving and clean the windows.

The Sweet Smell of Success

When viewers walk through your front door, you want them to be met with sweet aromas rather than the stench of wet dogs or stale cigarette smoke.  Distribute plug-in air fresheners around your house, bowls of potpourri, or open some windows to give the air some freshness.  A trick realtors use to make the smell of show homes more appealing is baking some bread or cookies or brewing fresh beans in a coffee maker.

Clear the Decks

A cluttered house does not float anyone’s boat.  Clear all surfaces of unused items and mess. Hide extraneous objects inside cupboards, drawers, or decorative storage boxes. However, make sure that you store things in a tidy manner.

A large, spacious floorplan will appeal to most buyers, so move your furniture into a formation that effectively utilizes the space.  If you think that you have too much furniture, consider putting it into storage on a temporary basis.

Light and Bright

Making your house look bright and attractive should catch you a buyer.  Flood the rooms with as much light as possible by keeping window dressings sheer and billowy. Light will make a room look bigger and happier.  Hang plenty of mirrors opposite windows to reflect light around the room.

Decorate with a neutral palette that will appeal to most people. Steer clear of clashing colors, offensive art, and tasteless furnishings that will distract viewers from seeing the true potential of your property.
