5 Decorating Tips for Empty Nesters

For the parents of children still living at home, nearly every room in your home is a monument to kid-dom in some way, shape, or form. But as the kids start to grow older and move into homes of their own, older adults must adjust to consider their owns needs and desires first again when redecorating a room. Here are five decorating tips for empty nesters.

Nicer Furniture

Furniture is a prime target for damage from children, mostly because of how frequently it is used. Everything from spills and stains to rips and tears are responsible for ruining the exterior of many items over the years. But with the kids gone, so too are the opportunities for them to damage your furniture. With children no longer a factor, the decision between leather and other fabrics for furniture suddenly becomes much more interesting.

Entertaining Requirements

With the kids out of the house, it’s easy to suddenly find yourself wondering what to do with your free time. A common solution is to entertain guests, making certain upgrades necessary, including possibly converting your child’s former room to a guest bedroom if everyone is ready for that decision. You could also update other areas of your home, such as a theater room, home bar, or a gaming room.

Flooring and Carpeting

Just like the furniture, children are also responsible for the destruction of more flooring than would otherwise be possible. But after the constant threat of mud stains and torn carpeting has passed, it is time to consider nicer flooring options. This could include things such as new carpets, hardwood flooring, or tile.

Outdoor Updates

The next of the five decorating tips for empty nesters takes us out of our homes and onto our lawns. Your yard is another area where you’ll suddenly have more room and time after your children move out. Taking the time to upgrade your patio furniture and the garden surrounding your home adds beauty and function. You can even grow your own produce depending upon your location.

Declutter

Children come with a lot of “stuff” that starts to accumulate when they are born and never really ever goes away. Once the kids are gone, take the time to go through your home and declutter your house and life. Donations, garage sales, and storage are just a few ways to get rid of the things you no longer have a reason to hang onto.
