Clean house is every housewife’s dream, but there is nothing more important than your health and safety. Unfortunately, there are many products on the market, various multi purpose cleaners, different powders and dish washers, which can significantly undermine your health and the health of your family.

Those dangerous chemicals are very strong and some of their ingredients are incredibly hard to rinse from the surfaces, in spite of the effort you put in it. If you understand chemistry just a little bit, you will be able to make your own recipes for homemade detergents based on natural ingredients. So, what can you use in order to protect your family from these harmful chemicals and what to use instead of popular products which can be found on the market at the moment?

Baking soda

To begin with, this is a mineral. The PH value of baking soda is around 8.1 which is close enough to neutrality (7 is PH neutral), so we talk about slightly alkalinity. According to this, it helps in neutralizing acid-based substances which can cause odors in water or air. Baking soda will surely help you to eliminate unpleasant smells of many chemicals. You can use it for your laundry, as an air refresher, carpet cleaner, even for unclogging your drains.

Washing soda

Sodium carbonate generally known as washing soda is much stronger alkaline than the baking soda (its PH is around 11). It’s much safer for using and more effective than most of widely spread products for cleaning which you can find in supermarket.

According to Gemma Tyler in this article “It’s much safer for using and more effective than most of the widely spread products for cleaning which you can find in supermarkets.”

However, it doesn’t mean that you can use it without protecting gloves. Washing soda is the most effective fighting grease or oils, it cleans lipstick marks and also neutralizes all kinds of odours.

Lemon juice and vinegar

White vinegar and lemon juice are acids which mean that they can neutralize dirty spots caused by alkaline, such as scale from hard water. Your sink is not the only one which is endangered by alkaline. Soft natural acids are also great for cleaning wooden surfaces. You will be able to clean dirty spots of glasses from your living room table in no time.

Soaps and detergents

Regular or liquid soap is made from grease and lye which made it very natural cleanser. Nevertheless, detergents are made from synthetic ingredients. Both of them cut grease very easily. Only difference is that detergents work better in hard water. If you live in urban conditions it will probably mean you will be forced to use detergents, or you can try to make your own. In every other case you can use natural soaps for cleaning. Lavender oil is perfect choice for perfuming your clothes and living space.

As we can see, there are many natural alternatives to present market products. If you are worried about your children’s health you can always decide to return to more natural choices. If you’re still concerned about persistent bacteria, steam mops might be perfect solution for you, since they only use steam, and not chemicals to clean the surfaces.
