“Patient Advocacy Matters: The Ultimate How-to Guide to Protect Your Health, Your Rights, Your Life and Your Loved Ones” by Teri Dreher
In today’s complex, profit-driven healthcare system, obtaining quality care is more challenging than ever. It led Teri Dreher, an RN with more than 36 years of critical care nursing experience, to become a professional patient advocate in 2011. Now, she’s published a how-to book for healthcare consumers to help them advocate for themselves and their families.
“Patient Advocacy Matters: The Ultimate How-to Guide to Protect Your Health, Your Rights, Your Life and Your Loved Ones” is designed as a resource for individuals trying to navigate today’s confusing, often-intimidating healthcare system.
“It’s too easy for patients to get lost in the shuffle,” says Dreher, founder and CEO of NShore Patient Advocates (NorthShoreRN.com), the largest advocacy firm in the Chicago area. “I wrote this book to give the average person the tools they need to look out for themselves and their loved ones in various healthcare settings.”
People like Darla, whose surgeon was unconcerned when she continued to hemorrhage after cancer surgery (Dreher, her ICU nurse, wound up with a ten-day suspension when she questioned the doctor’s decisions; Darla later passed away.) Or the 92 year old whose son hired Dreher as her advocate when his mom kept falling. (After studying her 14 medications—five which can cause vertigo—Dreher asked the woman’s doctor to review them. He discontinued several meds and recommended a nutritionist; now the woman is living safely in her home with support.)
Professional patient advocacy is a new but fast-growing field. More consumers are using private professional health advocates to guide them through a healthcare crisis. Dreher developed a passion for patient advocacy when her father-in-law fell critically ill on vacation in Belize. He survived as a result of Dreher’s hawkish intervention with both foreign and U.S. doctors and hospitals.

“Aging is Inevitable. Aches and Pains are Not,” Says Katy Bowman in New Book
Dynamic Aging: Simple Exercises for Whole-Body Mobility
What if everything we thought about aging was wrong? What if it’s not age making us stiffer and weaker but how we’ve been moving, and not moving, our bodies as we get older? With Dynamic Aging: Simple Exercises for Whole-Body Mobility, Bowman tailors her Nutritious Movement™ method of restoring pain-free, confident movement to older readers, along with the incredibly inspiring and practical stories of four ‘goldeners’ (each over 76) whose lives have changed because of it. Co-authors Joan Virginia Allen, Shelah M. Wilgus, Lora Woods and Joyce Faber share how they’ve been able to avoid surgeries, eliminate pain, and regain the freedom of movement that they had assumed was lost to normal aging, all through their movement work with Katy over the last decade. These septuagenarians are backpacking through mountains, climbing ladders (and even trees!) with ease, and walking miles in their daily lives. They are living proof that you aren’t just what you eat; you are how you move. It offers exercises designed to improve your movement habits through simple postural adjustments and exercises that challenge your body, gently, in a way that you probably stopped doing a long time ago without realizing it. As you slowly introduce more movement into your life, it’s likely you’ll see an improvement in the aches, pains, and stiffness that we associate with age but that are actually a product of our long-term movement patterns.”

Weedgalized in Colorado: True Tales from the High Country by Johnny Welsh
Colorado was the first state to legalize marijuana (cannabis) for recreational use. There’s an author in Colorado named Johnny Welsh who wrote,“Weedgalized in Colorado: True Tales from the High Country”. He is not a lawyer or sociologist, but a charismatic bartender in Frisco, Colorado – the ultimate storyteller and listener, He can give us an idea of what happened to the Colorado towns and people when weed was legalized. Is everything rosy? Hardly! His eyewitness report on the real-world impact of this historical movement,” gives us a boots-on-the-ground perspective of the good and bad results from the “green rush” stampede. Will what happened in Colorado happen across the country?
Johnny’s book will tell you how his state changed when pot hit the streets. His book is filled with amusing, inspiring and colorful stories that capture the wild ride of a state going to pot.
“Legalization was my customers’ most talked about issue,” he says. “I wanted to find out how the rest of Colorado felt, to explore the social and economic impact throughout the state. The excitement and activity was almost overwhelming.”
Welsh interviewed entrepreneurs and opportunists who scrambled to cash in on the “Green Rush”– growers, dispensary operators, head shop owners, tour guides, packagers, operators of hotels and lodges. They had to comply with state restrictions that frequently changed, but that didn’t slow the pursuit of an industry that had been waiting to be unleashed. What happened when pot arrived?
- By the end of the first year of legalization, Colorado had an estimated 1,700 medical and recreational marijuana dispensaries. They created over 18,000 new jobs and added $44 million to Colorado’s tax revenues. The state had the lowest unemployment rate in the union, and the increase in sales and ancillary businesses increased the state’s economy by $2.4 billion. Now these numbers have accelerated and last year Colorado collected $200 million in taxes and fees, $138 million going to education.
- Tourism exploded and streets were jammed with people spending money
- Everyone was excited about the new source of revenue.
- Rents went up and citizens were squeezed out of their homes.
- Homelessnesses. Colorado experienced the third largest increase in the total number of homeless people last year (721). It also had an increase of homeless veterans from 2015-2016. In a Denver Post article, spokesman Daniel Warvi for the Department of Veterans Affairs said “a perfect storm” of circumstances is pushing many veterans onto the streets. Veterans are coming to Colorado planning to get a job in the burgeoning legal marijuana industry or because Colorado’s job market is booming… But when they arrive in Colorado, the jobs many of them qualify for don’t pay enough to cover rent, and they learn they must be a Colorado resident for a year before getting a cannabis-related job.”
- The towns got crowded and now you need to plan when you go out. Unlike before, reservations are now needed, and employees are working harder to keep up with the demands of their customers. Johnny adds, “Be careful what you ask for, because nothing is one sided.”
Different reports tell different stories, but Johnny can tell what he’s seen so far.. He says that as more states legalize weed, people can stay where they are and they won’t have to move. There will be many new jobs in their home states and the influx of people into states like Colorado will abate. As legalization continues, more studies will be done and new stats will be verbalized.

One of the most passed around stories over the last several years, has been about the famous actor Jim Carrey. A number of years ago he went on Oprah to share this incredible experience that he had in his life that led him to earning a $10 million check for performing in one movie!
The world celebrated! Personal growth instructors, people who love things like the law of attraction started to share the story over and over and over again with their clients!
As he told the story, while broke and unsure of what he was going to do for money, he decided one day to write himself a check for $10 million, which he promptly put into his wallet.
And to the amazement of the audiences, a number of years later he pulled out that check after receiving an identical check from a movie company for $10 million! As teachers of these theories love to say, whatever you believe and send out to the universe, must return to you in kind.
But hold on Sally! Wait a minute! Is that truly the way the story goes?
After all the hoopla about writing a check, imagining it coming back to him, Jim Carrey came out in public to discuss the reality behind his huge financial windfall. As the story goes, the tidbits of information shared about how Jim Carrey created $10 million through the law of attraction, started to fall apart.
Number one best-selling author, life coach and counselor, inspirational speaker David Essel says he’s proud that Jim has come out and told the whole story… Instead of the partial truth that people love to run rampant with.
“…our society, and the world in general, loves to imagine that they can earn millions of dollars without doing much at all. According to several best-selling books, who love Jim Carrey’s story, if you put it out into the universe, with positive energy, whatever your goal is must come to you. It is absolute nonsense…This form of thinking is absolute crap.”
So what is the truth behind Jim Carrey earning $10 million, after putting that same amount on the check and carrying it in his wallet for years? Is it true that after just writing a check like that and putting it in your purse or your wallet, that you can have the same positive affect that Jim Carrey had, and years down the road somehow magically on that amount of money?
Of course not. Recently on social media, there have been clips of Jim Carrey completing the full story of what he did to earn that $10 million check. As a matter of fact, he’s even come out on social media saying that if anyone thinks they can simply write a check, put it in their pocket and somehow that amount of money is going to come to them without any effort…is simple foolish thinking.
Essel says he’s proud of Jim Carrey for coming out and telling the truth. “Any logical person understands the reality of success. When Jim came out and said that he worked his butt off for years and years, and did whatever it took to become successful as an actor, that is what led him to earning $10 million for a movie. It had nothing to do with writing a check and put it in his pocket.”
As Essel states in his number one best-selling book on the myth of positive thinking, we can achieve huge goals in life if I we work our butts off. If you’re willing to ask for help. If we’re willing to hire accountability partners to make sure we’re doing the work necessary to lose the weight, make the money, get sober and find deep love.
But it’s time we throw away all of this nonsense about the power of thought, the power of visualization, the power of affirmation and vision boards. Yes Essel believes all of those tools are a small percent part of success, 20% of someone success will come from the way they think, but as Essel states so eloquently in his number 1 best-selling book, 80% of our huge success in life will be coming to us by doing what most people won’t do. The hard, daily, repetitive work that out first feels uncomfortable… But down the road allows us to reap the rewards we’ve always wanted in life.

Tasteaholics by Rami Abramov and Vicky Ushakova
We’ve been told over and over how easy it is to shed the pounds—take this pill, follow this diet, do these exercises and the pounds will melt away. But most diets are abandoned because they’re boring, complicated and some are downright dangerous! As a nation, we spend billions of dollars on weight loss solutions and yet we’re still overweight.
Tasteaholics is tackling the problem head on by offering the ”Keto In Five” cookbook series that offers simple, nutritious meals based on the ketogenic lifestyle, which mirrors the diet of our ancestors before sugar and flour became abundant.
The Keto lifestyle encourages eating wholesome, low carb, high fat meals rather than the popular, yet ineffective, high carb, low fat diet. By running on healthy fats, the body breaks down food into ketones, which provide long-lasting energy, as opposed to glucose, which spikes blood sugar followed by a sharp drop.
Founders Rami Abramov and Vicky Ushakova believe that the key ingredients to weight loss success are simplicity and satisfaction. They designed the “Keto In Five” series, which covers the 3 main daily meals, with each delicious recipe using only 5 ingredients and containing only 5 grams of carbohydrates.
Tasteaholics’ recipes prove that you don’t need to be a great cook or use dozens of ingredients to make a delicious, healthy meal!
